Arab World Hooked On Turkish Soap Operas

Whenever I visit my family in Lebanon or Syria, I find some of my family members yet again hooked on a new Turkish Soap opera. If I’m there for more than a week, I start knowing what’s happening in the show because you can find it playing everywhere on all TV sets from homes to supermarkets. Politics and culture intertwine here as the shows brought along some controversy.  Turkish culture is very similar to Arab culture and Arabs can relate to Turkish people more than westerners. Arab women for instance, love the shows because the women characters are strong and are treated as equals to men. Of course, some Arab men have complained that their wives are learning some undesired tricks from these characters.
